Active intruder response

Intruder Lockdown Guidance Key

Immediate Priorities

☐ Act immediately when you observe behavior or conditions that indicate danger. You do not need permission to protect life.

☐ Communicate threat location in plain language when safe to do so.

☐ Clear hallways by bringing students into the nearest room.

☐ Lock or barricade doors. Turn off the lights when appropriate. Silence devices.

☐ Maintain accountability. Use a Green Card when everyone is accounted for. Use a Red Card when someone is missing or injured.

Threat Outside Versus Threat Inside

SituationPrimary ObjectiveExpected Staff Action

Threat inside buildingSurvive and reduce exposureLock or barricade, stay out of sight, remain quiet, prepare to evacuate if safe route becomes available, follow law enforcement direction for evacuation.

Law Enforcement Arrival

☐ Remain calm and follow all instructions.

☐ Keep hands visible and empty. Do not run toward officers.

☐ Evacuate only when directed by law enforcement during a lockdown evacuation.

☐ Do not dismiss any student until official release is authorized.

Purpose: Provide clear, real-time procedures for staff, parishioners, volunteers, and visitors during an active intruder or violent threat. Protect life first.

Situational Awareness

☐ Stay alert to unusual behavior, sounds, or disturbances.

☐ Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, act immediately.

☐ Identify exits, potential barricade materials, and communication options.

☐ Every second matters. Do not wait for confirmation before acting to protect yourself or others.
